January 12th 1822CJAt Longtown yesterday week, Mr John Bowman, miller, advanced in years.February 23rd 1822CPAt Oakshawhill in Cumberland on Tuesday, aged 65, Mr Thomas Carruthers, many years carrier between Longtown and Newcastle, and an extensive butter and bacon factor.March 2nd 1822CPAt Longtown, on the 19th ult., greatly respected, John Davison, reedmaker, after a tedious illness, aged 33 years.March 23rd 1822CJIn Newcastle upon Tyne Infirmary, last week, where he had underwent the amputation of his thigh, Mr John Nixon, late of Bewcastle demesne, in the prime of life.March 30th 1822CJAt Highfield in the parish of Arthuret, at the advanced age of 101 years, Mrs Mary Carr, mother to Mrs James of that place ? she retained her faculties in great perfection to her last moments, and died universally respected by a large circle of friends and relatives.June 8th 1822CPAt Hathgate, parish of Nichol Forest, on Monday last, Mrs Mary Little, aged 73.June 22nd 1822CJAt Longtown on Saturday last, Mrs Mary Ann Johnston, aged 28 years, eldest daughter of the late Mr Irving, surgeon of that place; she was a most amiable young woman, and her loss will be felt not only by a large circle of acquaintances, but by the poor, to whom she was a liberal benefactress.September 28th 1822CJA few days since at Netheroakshaw in the parish of Bewcastle in this county, Miss Mary Morrison, aged 25. This unfortunate young woman was a native of New Albie near Dumfries ? she had every attention paid to her in her last moments that humanity could suggest.October 26th 1822CJOn Sunday last, at Longtown, Mr David Murray, aged 62, well known as a coach driver.November 30th 1822CJAt Beck, Kirkandrews on Esk, last week, Mr Thomas Coulthard, aged 55.December 21st 1822CJOn the 15th inst at Burnfoot, parish of Stapleton, Mr George Forster at the great age of 103. Above 80 years ago, he was a grocer and spirit dealer in Bewcastle, and on that account was called the Old Merchant until his death. He was what is termed a seven-month child, having been born two months before his time, and though addicted to the use of ardent spirits, he never experienced sickness in his life. He died in easy circumstances, and was always considered an honest and worthy man.January 4th 1823 CJLately, at Steppings, Bewcastle, advanced in years, Mr Gideon Millar - for a number of years he transacted the parochial concerns of the above parish.January 25th 1823 CJAt Longtown on the 16th inst Mr Richard Napier, aged 36.Lately, in the 86th year of her age, Margaret Nicholl, relict of Mr John Scott of Saughtrees, Bewcastle - she was distinguished as a benevolent and pious woman. February 15th 1823 CJAt Oakbank near Longtown on Saturday last, aged 70, Mr William Ferguson. March 8th 1823 CJAt Mossband, on Saturday last, Mrs Jane Graham, aged 75.At Halburn, same day, Mrs Mary Coulthard, aged 86.March 15th 1823 CJAt Longtown on Monday last, after a short illness, Mrs Mary Wright, aged 42, in life highly esteemed, and whose death is deeply regretted by that town and neighbourhood.April 5th 1823 CJAt Longtown on Sunday last, Mr John Watters, aged 26, much respected by his friends and acquaintances. May 10th 1823 CPAt Longtown, on Friday 2nd Inst. Mr Thomas Bell, in the 83rd year of his age, who taught upward of 60 years, with great success, the various branches of mathematical and commercial learning. His talents and assiduity were such that his numerous pupils, some of whom fill very important stations in various parts of the world, will ever revere his memory and which, for his exemplary deportment throughout life, will long be cherished by all who knew him. May 10th 1823 CJAt Longtown on the 2nd inst Margaret, wife of Mr David Beck, aged 70. June 21st 1823 CJOn the 13th inst at Irthington, 8 miles from this city, Mr Robert Bowman, farmer, in the one hundred and eighteenth year of his age...This Cumberland Patriarch was born at Bridgewood foot, a hamlet about 2 miles from Irthington, in the month of October 1705, in the house where his grandfather had resided and where his father also was born. both of whom were brought up to husbandry. His ancestors were Roman Catholics, and in the early part of his life he professed that religion, but many years ago he became a member of the Church of England...During the course of his long life, he was only once intoxicated, which was at a wedding, and he never used tea or coffee; his principal food being bread, potatoes, hasty-pudding, broth and occasionally a little flesh meat. His chief beverage being water, or milk with water mixed... being remarkable careful of his money, he never used snuff or tobacco. In his 108th year, he walked to and from Carlisle (16 miles) without the aid of a staff, to see the workmen lay the foundations of the Eden Bridge...July 26th 1823 CJAt Field Foot in the parish of Kirklinton, on the 7th inst. Mr Thomas Dalton, yeoman, aged 57. He had been for many years a schoolmaster, a situation which he filled with great credit to himself, and advantage to those placed under his care. August 2nd 1823 CP July 18th at Pattenstown, Kirkandrews on Esk, Mr John Wright, aged 76 years, much respected by all who knew him. August 30th 1823 CPOn the 22nd Inst. Elizabeth Brown of Kitty Strait, Kirklinton, wife of Henry Brown, labourer. Her death was awfully sudden; in the morning she left her house to work in the field of a neighbour, and in the evening she returned home apparently in good health and spirits. In the course of a few minutes after she had taken her supper, she dropt down and expired. October 25th 1823 CJOn Thursday last at Bogburn, parish of Kirkandrews on Esk, Rosannah Graham, aged 24.On the 22nd inst at Heathlands, parish of Rockliff, in the 44th year of her age, Margaret, eldest daughter of the late John Forster Esq.November 1st 1823 CJAt Longtown on Thursday last, Francis, the wife of John Wilson, late coachman to Sir James Graham, Bart of Netherby.December 6th 1823 CJAt Longtown on Monday last, Jane, relict of Mr John Turnbull.Same place on Thursday, awfully sudden, Mr Thomas Glendinning of the Swan Inn. He was in perfect health at 3 o'clock in the morning, and at the usual time of rising was found dead by the side of his wife. December 20th 1823 CJOn Sunday last at Hanley in Kirklinton, Mr Ambrose Athy, aged 76; his strict integrity and benevolent disposition rendered him much esteemed and respected by all his acquaintances.December 27th 1823 CJAt Dykeside, Kirkandrews on Esk, on Wednesday week, Catherine Graham, widow, advanced in years.At Longtown on the 19th inst aged 33, Thomas Nichol, late of Howend.January 3rd 1824CJAt Westlinton on Sunday last, Mr Thomas Brown, aged 83.January 10th 1824CJAt Longtown on the 29th ult, where he had resided for some years, Mr Robert Dodgson of Roantrees, at the advanced age of 82.February 7th 1824CJOn the 15th ult in London, of a paralytic stroke, Mr Wm Barwise, a native of Kirklinton and supervisor at Warrington.March 6th 1824CJOn Thursday last, Thos.
