He was a native of Glasgow, but had resided at the former place upwards of forty years, and was greatly respected for his upright and consistent conduct as a reformer, and as an honest and intelligent man. He was the father of the small boy Bell, who was tried last week at our assizes for stealing 14 sovereigns, and whose shame caused him such poignancy of grief that he may be said to have died of a broken heart.March 3rd 1832CPOn the 29th ult at Skitby, parish of Kirklinton, Jane, wife of Mr John Graham, much and deservedly respected.April 14th 1832CJAt Longtown, on Wednesday last, Mr John Martin, aged 86, many years brewer to the late Sir James Graham of Netherby.July 7th 1832CPAt Nook, in the township of Nichol Forest and parish of Kirkandrews upon Esk, on Monday 25th ult, Mr John Forster, yeoman, after a short but severe illness, aged 67 years.July 7th 1832CPAt Bewcastle on Thursday 28th ult, the Rev. Wm Lauder, Dissenting Minister at Know Chapel, in the parish of Bewcastle in this county. The deceased was nearly 40 years minister of the Dissenting Congregation at Know. He bore a long and tedious illness for several weeks but insisted on being carried to the chapel in a chair to perform divine service. He preached and administered the sacrament on Sunday last, and spoke with fervour and animation till nearly exhausted, when he took to bed and died in the course of three days afterwards.July 28th 1832CJAt Longtown, on Monday last, Mr Walter Brown, carrier from that place to this city, advanced in years.September 15th 1832CPAt Longtown on the 9th inst. Such was the deceased?s love for water that one quart on a cold winter?s day was only a moderate draught in his opinion, and in estimating the quantity drank by him it will be far below the average, if we take his consumption of ?Adam?s Wine? at six gallons per week, which for the last 20 years would amount to 6240 gallons or 173 1/3 barrels!August 31st 1833CJAt Longtown on Thursday last, Mrs Boustead of the Globe Inn, advanced in years. She died in an awfully sudden manner, having dropped down and instantly expired, though in her usual health up to the moment of her death.October 5th 1833CJIn Swift?s Row in this city, on the 20th ult, Miss Mary Somerville of Longtown, aged 22 years, much respected.October 12th 1833CJOn the 2nd inst Mr George Palmer, a respectable yeoman at Sikeside in the parish of Kirklinton, at the advanced age of 95.October 19th 1833CJAt Longtown on the 10th inst, the Rev James Patton, minister of the Scotch Church in the above town, aged 48; on the 11th, Miss Elizabeth Bell aged 21 years.At Haggiestown-holme Arthuret on the 9th inst, Mrs Jane McDougal, at an advanced age.November 2nd 1833CJAt Bedford on the 20th ult, Mr James Wilkinson, son of Mr John Wilkinson of Longtown in this county, aged 30 years; a young man of great piety and highly respected by all who knew him.
