May 5th 1838CPAt Longtown on the 29th ult, Mr George Harkness, aged 75, and same place on the 30th, David the infant son of Mr Joseph Tait.June 2nd 1838CPOn the 28th ult at Longtown, Jane, the relict of Mr Thomas Armstrong, nailer.June 9th 1838CPOn the 2nd inst at Longtown in the 79th year of his age, Mr John Armstrong, gardener.At Henrystown, Kirkandrews on Esk, on the 5th inst, Mr William Little, labourer, aged 37.June 23rd 1838CPOn the 28th July 1837, on his passage from Calcutta to the Mauritius, Captain William Lattimer of the ship Andromeda, aged 31, fourth son of Mr William Lattimer, late of Burnfoot near Longtown. The loss of this young man was much lamented by his relatives. His urbanity of manners and kindness of disposition caused him to be beloved by all who knew him.July 14th 1838CPAt Longtown on the 7th inst. Mr Thomas Marshall, aged 28; on the 9th William, infant son of Mr William Faden; on the 10th, Jane, daughter of Mr Thomas Kerr, innkeeper, aged 4 years; and on the 2nd, Mr Matthew Ferguson, advanced in years.July 28th 1838CPAt Longtown on the 13th inst, Mrs Jane Irving, relict of Mr Walter Irving, aged 79.September 8th 1838CPOn the 8th of August after a lingering illness which he bore with patience and resignation, Joseph, son of the late John Forrester of Hole of Line, parish of Bewcastle, aged 32.At Longtown on the 31st inst, Mrs Elizabeth Paisley, advanced in years; same day and place, Isabella Wybergh, in her 8th year.September 15th 1838CPAt Longtown on the 6th inst, Mr Thomas Noble, aged 59; same day and place, Elizabeth, daughter of Mr James Underwood, aged 2 years.At Little Corby, on the 10th inst, Mr John Scott, joiner, aged 28, son of Mrs Hannah Scott of Longtown.On Sunday the 9th inst while on a visit at the residence of her brother, Captain Elliot, Glengirtholm Canonbie, Mrs Bogie of Langholm, relict of Mr James Bogie, Kirkcaldy.November 24th 1838CPAt Gougrave House, Island of Grenada, West Indies, on the 12th September last, John Forrester Esq. aged 48. He had the management of several estates on the island, was Colonel of the St John?s Regiment of Militia, and acted as Justice. During a 28 years residence in Grenada, Mr Forrester?s kind manners in private life, his upright conduct as a magistrate, and the fulfilment of his many other public duties, secured him the esteem and respect of his numerous acquaintances. The deceased was the eldest son of Mr Edward Forrester of Slacks in Bewcastle in this county, and has left his aged father in Bewcastle and two brothers in the Island of Grenada to lament his loss.December 8th 1838CPAt Rigg near Longtown, on the 1st inst, Miss Mary Graham, in the prime of life.December 22nd 1838CPAt Longtown on the 7th inst, Mrs Rosanna Armstrong, aged 87; on the 12th inst, Jane, daughter of Mr Thomas Scott, aged 16 months; on the 16th, James, son of Mr Robert Hewitt, aged 7 years; on the 18th Thomas, son of Mr John best, aged 2 years, and on the 19th, Jane, infant daughter of Mr Geo Huggan.At Peth, near Longtown, on the 18th inst. Miss Mary Johnstone, aged 21.At Hallburn, near Longtown on the 8th inst, Mr Thomas Johnston, aged 80.January 5th 1839 CPOn Monday 24th December, very suddenly, of inflammation of the lungs, Ellen, second daughter of Mr Thomas Gilliburn, of Heathergrove, Kirklinton, aged 11. Mrs Deborah Little, aged 62, wife of Mr George Little, much and deservedly respected. She was the mother of 15 children, 14 of whom, and an aged parent, followed her remains to the grave at Wetherall, on Friday week.At Longtown on the 9th inst, Miss Blacklock, dressmaker, aged 40, much respected, and same place on Monday last, Mrs Esther Hewitt and Mrs Margaret Crozier, both advanced in years.April 4th 1840CPAt Nook in the township of Nichol Forest on Tuesday the 24th ult, Elizabeth, widow of John Forrester Esq. of Brown Know, aged 81, much and deservedly regretted by a large circle of friends and acquaintances, to whom she endeared herself by her amiable and charitable disposition.At Woodside on Wednesday 25th ult, Mr John Forster, aged 61, for a number of years farmer at Roan in the township of Nichol Forest, for which township he acted as assistant overseer of the poor for a considerable period, giving universal satisfaction in fulfilling the arduous duties of that office.April 11th 1840CPAt Liddel Lodge, on the 8th inst, the Rev William Irving, MA, Jesus College, Oxford.May 2nd 1840 CJAt Cais Bank in the parish of Stapleton on the 4th ult, Mr Robert Forster, farmer, aged 84 years.At Shawhead in Bewcastle, on the 15th ult, Mary wife of Andrew Armstrong, stone mason.May 16th 1840CPAt Longtown on Friday last, Mrs Elizabeth Wardrope, aged 50, and on Wednesday, Margaret, daughter of Mr James Robinson, aged 13 years.At Baxton Gill, Nichol Forest, on Tuesday last, Mr John Johnston, aged 80,much respected.
